Traditional large law firms are notoriously difficult places to work. Billable hour requirements are onerous, and have steadily increased over time. Profit pressures permeate, and the human factor suffers. Few lawyers stay more than just a few years before moving on to in-house jobs, teaching positions, solo practices, or non-legal careers.
At Progress, we believe great lawyers can practice together in a large firm without sacrificing their happiness.
We offer well-credentialed, experienced attorneys autonomy comparable to what is typically only possible in a solo or small firm practice but with the advantages of being in a larger firm. Specifically, we take great pride in providing attorneys with flexibility many wished they could have in the traditional large law firm but were afraid to ask.
Some attorneys want to be heavily involved in the practice of law throughout the year. At our firm, they likely will make more money than at a traditional large law firm. Yes, we mean it. AmLaw 200 law firms will not pay you more than Progress if you are busting your hump.
Other attorneys would gladly accept less in compensation to have a reduced minimum billable hours requirement. They may want to do this for any number of reasons. For example, they might want to take on a significant pro bono matter. Or spend more time with young children, take an extended vacation, write a book, show that you can develop business for the firm. Traditional law firms suggest that yes, maybe, they will consider offering a part time arrangement to an associate for a reduced salary. Most lawyers know that there is probably no going back once you suggest that you are not going to be the major profit center they had hoped.
We have a highly-generous compensation formula that applies to all attorneys. We richly reward our attorneys for their time, their business generation, their collaboration, and their recruiting. And we have profit sharing for all of the attorneys at the firm, not just the partners. Compensation is objective, not subjective. Surprises and politics are avoided.
Yes, we’re that different, and we’re proud of it.
- For Associates, we offer a new alternative, a better alternative. You can have the level of hours you want and change them up or down as your circumstances warrant. And if you are interested in partnership, we are very interested in helping you hone your technical skills as well as your business development potential.
- For Of Counsel, we offer a platform to engage in client work and be rewarded for business development in a way that would not be possible on your own.
- For Partners, we get it. You are annoyed that a select few make critical decisions on compensation and that you are tightly constrained in structuring client engagements. Here, you won’t have to lobby the compensation committee to be fairly compensated. And you will have significantly more autonomy to set fee structures that make sense for you and your clients.
